Mit dem von buildingSMART Deutschland organisierten und zusammen mit Partnern entwickelten BIM Fit Check© können Softwareunternehmen die BIM-Fähigkeit ihrer Produkte für unterschiedliche Anwendungsfälle belegen – und ihre Lösung inklusive der Workflows live einem Fachpublikum präsentieren.

Nach den ersten beiden erfolgreichen BIM Fit Check-Veranstaltungen 2025 zu den Anwendungsfällen "Achsaustausch" und "BIM und Georeferenzierung" (Nachberichte dazu finden Sie hier und hier) widmen wir uns im Frühjahr 2026 der korrekten Implementierung des BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) in Softwareprodukte. 

Die Idee

Um in BIM-Projekten mit zahlreichen unterschiedlichen Projektpartnern und ihren individuellen Softwaretools nahtlos Informationen auszutauschen und insgesamt reibungslos zusammenzuarbeiten, ist Software erforderlich, die diese Anforderungen an BIM-Workflows zuverlässig unterstützt. Deshalb sollten diese Softwareprodukte insbesondere die Standards von buildingSMART für Open-BIM-Workflows unterstützen. Allen voran den Standard IFC (Industry Fondation Classes) für den Informationsaustausch und ergänzend dazu den Standard BCF für das Issue-Management. Diese Standards sind seit vielen Jahren bewährt und stehen Softwareunternehmen kostenlos zur Implementierung zur Verfügung. 

Der Nutzen dieser Standards in Open-BIM-Workflows hängt sowohl von den konkreten Anwendungsfällen sowie von der Qualität der Implementierung in den jeweiligen Softwareprodukten und deren technischen Spezifikationen ab.
An dieser Stelle setzt der BIM Fit Check© von buildingSMART Deutschland an. Wir wollen erreichen, dass die Implementierung der Standards zukünftig noch besser den Anforderungen der Anwender entspricht. Dazu unterstützen wir die teilnehmenden Softwareunternehmen technisch bei klar abgegrenzten Implementierungsaufgaben für jeweils eine konkrete Aufgabenstellung aus der Praxis. Zugleich fördern wir damit einen erkenntnisreichen und befruchtenden Austausch der beteiligten Entwicklerteams untereinander sowie mit der Jury und dem Publikum im Rahmen einer öffentlichen Abschlusspräsentation.

Vier Anwendungsfälle im Fokus

Eine Arbeitsgruppe von buildingSMART Deutschland hat folgende, regelmäßig in Projekten auftauchende Anwendungsfälle definiert, um daraus einen möglichen Standardprozess zu generieren:

1. Koordination einer Kollision zwischen einem Model-Checker und 2 CAD-Systemen
2. Frage durch Projektbeteiligte in einem CDE (Common Data Environment) mit Antwort aus einem CAD-System
3. Bilaterale Kommunikation zwischen CAD-Systemen
4. Mängelmanagement auf der Baustelle mit Hilfe eines CDE

Diese Anwendungsfälle wurden iterativ in einen gemeinsamen Standardprozess überführt und bilden die Grundlage für die Aufgabenstellung des BIM Fit Check 2026.

Die Vorgehensweise, die Phasen und der zeitliche Ablauf des BIM Fit Check

Vorbereitungsphase
In Absprache mit den Teilnehmern bieten wir ein Support-Meeting (online) zur Klärung von Fragen zur Lösung der Aufgabenstellungen.

Durchführungsphase

• 3. Februar 2026: Kick-off-Veranstaltung des BIM Fit Checks 2026
• Wöchentlicher Jour fixe-Termin (jeweils dienstags von 16 Uhr bis 17 Uhr ab dem 10. Februar 2026 (Fit-Phase) 
• April 2026 Checkphase (online), genaue Termine werden gemeinsam vereinbart
• 13. Mai 2026: Die Teilnehmer am BIM Fit Check 2026 präsentieren auf dem 23. buildingSMART-Anwendertag 2026 in Berlin live vor Fachpublikum die Lösung der gestellten Aufgaben zum Anwendungsfall „BIM Collaboration Format (BCF)"
• 13. Mai 2026: Verleihung der Digital-Badges „BIM Fit Check 2026 – BIM Collaboration Format"

Der Testprozess

Die Bestimmung der tatsächlichen Implementierungsqualität wird durch Analyse von importierten und exportierten BCF-Dateien aus Ihren Softwareanwendungen durchgeführt. 

So läuft der Test ab:
Um aussagekräftige Ergebnisse zu erhalten, werden BCF-Daten aus einem standardisierten IFC-Testmodell mit vordefinierten Merkmalsätzen abgeleitet.

Import/Export in Ihrem Testsystem:
Die zuvor generierten BCF-Testdaten werden in Ihr Testsystem importiert und dort abgeändert, um anschließend eine Auswertung gemäß der BCF 3.0 Spezifikation und den Anforderungen aus den vier Anwendungsfällen vorzunehmen.

Alle Ergebnisse werden in einem standardisierten Format erfasst.

Die Bewältigung der Aufgabe wird anhand eines festen Kriterienkatalogs bewertet, den Sie hier finden. 

Die Jury

Georg Dangl

Georg Dangl schloss 2013 sein Studium als Bauingenieur ab. Bereits während seines Studiums hatte er sich auf BIM spezialisiert. Seine berufliche Laufbahn begann er als Bauleiter in Süddeutschland. Später kam er als Advanced Researcher zu Prof. Rasso Steinmann an die Hochschule München und konzentrierte sich auf internationale Forschungsprojekte. Er moderiert weiterhin die internationale BCF & CDE Implementers Group innerhalb von buildingSMART.

2017 wurde die DanglIT GmbH gegründet, die sich auf Beratungsdienstleistungen und cloudbasierte Softwarelösungen für die Bauindustrie spezialisiert hat. Der Schwerpunkt liegt auf den Bereichen Ausschreibungen und Building Information Modelling (BIM). Das Unternehmen beschäftigt derzeit fünf Mitarbeiter und bedient mittlerweile Kunden in ganz Europa.

Marcus Nill

Marcus Nill ist Bautechniker bei der IngenieurGruppe Bauen in Freiburg. Zu seinen Aufgaben gehört:

Pasi Paasiala

Pasi Paasiala ist Mitbegründer und Chefarchitekt bei Solibri und buildingSMART-Mitglied. Außerdem ist er einer der Hauptinitiatoren des BCF-Standards und maßgeblich beteiligt an den Standards BCF-API und Documents API. Zuletzt ist er auch Mitwirkender an den Standards IDS und IFC5.

Show what your software can do – and play an active role in shaping the future of the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF).

With BIM Fit Check©, organized by buildingSMART Germany and developed in collaboration with partners, software companies can demonstrate the BIM capability of their products for different use cases – and present their solutions, including workflows, live to an audience of experts.

Following the first two successful BIM Fit Check events in 2025 on the use cases “axis exchange” and “BIM and georeferencing” (you can find follow-up reports here and here), in spring 2026 we will focus on the correct implementation of the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) in software products.

The idea

In order to seamlessly exchange information and collaborate smoothly in BIM projects with numerous different project partners and their individual software tools, software is required that reliably supports these BIM workflow requirements. Therefore, these software products should specifically support the buildingSMART standards for open BIM workflows. First and foremost, the IFC (Industry Foundation Classes) standard for information exchange and, in addition, the BCF standard for issue management. These standards have been proven over many years and are available to software companies for implementation free of charge. 

The benefits of these standards in Open BIM workflows depend both on the specific use cases and on the quality of implementation in the respective software products and their technical specifications.

This is where the BIM Fit Check© from buildingSMART Germany comes in. We want to ensure that the implementation of the standards better meets user requirements in the future. To this end, we provide technical support to the participating software companies for clearly defined implementation tasks for a specific practical problem. At the same time, we promote an insightful and fruitful exchange between the participating development teams, as well as with the jury and the audience, in the context of a public final presentation.

Four use cases in focus

A working group of buildingSMART Germany has defined the following use cases, which regularly arise in projects, in order to generate a possible standard process:

1. Coordination of a collision between a model checker and two CAD systems
2. Question from project participants in a CDE (Common Data Environment) with answer from a CAD system
3. Bilateral communication between CAD systems
4. Defect management on the construction site with the help of a CDE

These use cases were iteratively translated into a common standard process and form the basis for the BIM Fit Check 2026 task.

Before you apply to participate, we offer two online info events for those interested in the BIM Fit Check. The purpose of these info events is to answer your questions about the BIM Fit Check and explain further details about the procedure, tasks, test process, and evaluation criteria.

The procedure, phases, and timeline of the BIM Fit Check

Preparation phase

In consultation with the participants, we offer a weekly support meeting (online) to clarify questions about solving the tasks.

Implementation phase

• 3 February, 2026: Kick-off event for the BIM Fit Check 2026
• Weekly meeting (every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. starting 10 February, 2026 (fit phase)
• April 2026 Check phase (online), exact dates to be agreed upon together
• 13 May, 2026: Participants in the BIM Fit Check 2026 will present their solutions to the tasks set for the BIM Collaboration Format (BCF) use case live to an expert audience at the 23rd buildingSMART User Day 2026 in Berlin.
• 13 May, 2026: Awarding of the digital badges “BIM Fit Check 2026 – BIM Collaboration Format”

The test process

The quality of the implementation is determined by analyzing imported and exported BCF files from your software applications. 

This is how the test works:
In order to obtain meaningful results, BCF data is derived from a standardized IFC test model with predefined property sets.

Import/export in your test system:
The previously generated BCF test data is imported into your test system and modified there in order to then perform an evaluation in accordance with the bcfXML 2.1 specification and the requirements from the four use cases.

All results are recorded in a standardized format.

The completion of the task is evaluated on the basis of a fixed set of criteria, which you can find here. 

The jury

Georg Dangl

Georg Dangl graduated as civil engineer in 2013, after specializing in BIM during his studies and started his professional life in the role of a construction manager in southern Germany. Later, he joined Prof. Rasso Steinmann at the Munich University of Applied Sciences as an Advanced Researcher and focused on international research projects. He is still moderating the international BCF & CDE Implementers Group within buildingSMART.

In 2017, DanglIT GmbH was founded, specializing in providing consulting services and cloud-based software solutions for the construction industry. The focus lies on the areas of tendering and Building Information Modelling (BIM). The company has grown to 5 employees and is now serving customers throughout Europe.

Marcus Nill

Marcus Nill is a construction engineer at IngenieurGruppe Bauen in Freiburg. His responsibilities include:

• BIM coordination
• Internal CAD standardization/establishment of BIM processes
• Technical manager CAD since 2015
• Structural engineering in building construction and hydraulic engineering
• Internal CAD support
• Trainer
   

Pasi Paasiala

Pasi Paasiala is Co-Founder and Principal Architect at Solibri and a buildingSMART Fellow. Also he's a key initiator of the BCF standard and a significant contributor to BCF-API and Documents API standards. Lately also a contributor to IDS and IFC5 standards.
